‘A Lesson in Forgiving’ (Part two)

(Characters: Sally Anne, Little Molly)

(Setting: The schoolhouse)

(Props: none)

(Sally Anne enters first, paces center stage, apparently waiting for someone. Then Little Molly enters, looking for Sally Anne.)

Molly: Oh, there you are, Sally Anne! I've been looking for you!

Sally Anne: Oh, hi, Little Molly. I've been waiting for you to get here. I want to talk to you.

Molly: Well, I've been wanting to talk to you.

Sally Anne: Well, then you go first.

Molly: (politely) No, no, no. You go ahead.

Sally: You go!

Molly: No, you!!! (Tension building)

Sally: I don't want to go first. You go ahead!!!

Molly: You!

Sally: You!

Molly: You!

(Sudden pause. they both turn away from each other--back to back in a huff with arms folded)

Molly: Look! You said you wanted to talk to me, so go ahead!

Sally: But you said you want to talk to me!!

Molly: (breathes a long sigh) This is getting us nowhere. (Pause) I guess can go first.

Sally: (abruptly) No, no, no, I'll go first.

Molly: But I just said I'm going first!

Sally: I'll go first, thank you very much!

Molly: (lightly) Okay, go ahead!

Sally Anne: (looks back with a stare, and finally breaks down)

Well, I guess.... I.... just wanted to say.... You know how I said all those things to you about your coloring and everything?

Molly: Yes.

Sally Anne: (slowly) Well, I just wanted to apologize for everything that I said.

Molly: (faster pace) That's what I wanted to talk to you about.

Sally: Well, after we argued, I felt really guilty. So I went and talked to Grandma Lucy.

Molly: (faster paced) Wait. You went and talked to Grandma Lucy?

Sally Anne: Yes. She explained to me what I was feeling and what I could do to fix it.

Molly: I went and talked to her too!

Sally: Right then, we both kneeled down and prayed for God to forgive me, for being mean to my best friend.

Molly: Oh Sally, do you really mean it?

Sally: Oh yes, Molly I do! And now I'm gonna do the other thing that Grandma Lucy told me to do.

Molly: What's that?

Sally Anne: (sincerely) Little Molly, can you ever forgive me for saying those things to you?

Molly: (sincerely) Why of course, Sally. (quickly) I know you didn't really mean what you said. Everybody says things they don't really mean.

Sally Anne: Thank you, Molly. I feel so much better now.

Molly: I do, too.

Sally: I guess the best way to fix things is to apologize as quickly as possible.

(They exit talking together)

Molly: And to forgive one another.

Sally: Hey, you want to come to my house and color?

Molly: Yeah let's!

(They exit)
